19世纪70年代是不是已完全被移民、旅行以及人口流动所主宰了呢?人们很容易忘记,地球上大多数人仍生活在而且最后死在他们的出生地,说得更准确些,他们的活动范围比工业革命之前大不了多少,甚或说没有什么变化。法国的统计数字显示,1861年有88%的法国人生活在他们出生的地方,若根据教会记事簿记载,更有高达97%的人生活在他们出生的教区。世界上跟上述法国人相类似的人数,也肯定多于流动人数和移民人数。[19] 不过,人们渐渐抛开了他们魂系梦牵、精神依托的地方。他们看见的事物是他们父辈从来未曾见过的,甚至他们自己也想不到他们会亲眼看见,他们已习惯于在这样的环境中生活。在本书所述时期行将结束之际,移民不仅构成了诸如澳大利亚等国,构成了纽约、芝加哥诸城市人口的多数,而且也成为斯德哥尔摩、克里斯蒂安尼亚[Christiania,现奥斯陆(Oslo)]和布达佩斯的人口多数,外来移民占柏林和罗马总人口的55%—60%,巴黎和维也纳的移民约占65%。[20] 整体而言,城市和新工业区像块磁铁一样吸引了他们。那么,等待他们的是怎样的生活呢?
